CHEMICAL vs. MINERAL SUNSCREENS

One of the most important aspects of skincare is the application of sunscreen daily: yes, even in the cold winter months. Sunscreen is critical to prevent skin cancer as well as premature aging. As you think about incorporating sunscreen into your daily routine, you may be wondering whether or not to use a chemical sunscreen or mineral sunscreen. Maybe you never even knew there was a difference, or maybe the sunscreens you have chosen in the past have caused irritation to your skin. It is important to realize the differences between sunscreen products to understand which will work best for you.

Chemical Sunscreens – Chemical sunscreens absorb directly into your skin. This type of sunscreen may be thinner and less noticeable on the skin but these products are more likely to cause irritation and sensitivity. This type of sunscreen is absorbed quickly and is more resistant to water and sweat. Chemical sunscreen is less likely to leave a residue behind on top of your skin.

Mineral Sunscreens- Mineral sunscreens contain active mineral ingredients such as titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. The mineral sunscreens may also be referred to as physical sunscreens because they act as a physical barrier to protect your skin from the sun. This product does not absorb past the skin’s uppermost layers. Mineral sunscreens have a smaller chance of irritating the skin as they are not as heavily absorbed. This does not mean they are less effective, but you must be more careful upon application to ensure the sunscreen doesn’t get wiped off or be minimized by sweat. It may require more applications throughout the day. Mineral sunscreens can be a much safer alternative for those who are worried about long-term exposure to chemical ingredients on the skin. In conclusion, mineral sunscreens are best for children and for people with sensitive skin or melasma.

So, which one is best for me?

The best type of sunscreen will vary from person to person. Each person will react differently to sunscreen ingredients. With whichever sunscreen you choose, it is MOST important to apply it daily and reapply often during sunny days. If you are considering a mineral sunscreen but do not like the pigment and residue of the traditional mineral sunscreen give our SOYIER Bronzee Solaire Hydratant Tinted physical/mineral sunscreen!
